India's legendary batsman Virat Kohli has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs) following India's exit from the ICC Champions Trophy. Kohli, a pivotal figure in Indian cricket for over a decade, made his decision public on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, citing the need to make way for emerging talent.
It has been an incredible journey in ODI cricket. Winning the 2011 World Cup at home and lifting the 2019 trophy in England were among the greatest moments of my career. Now, it's time for the next generation to step up," Kohli said in a statement released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
While stepping away from ODIs, the Indian batting maestro confirmed that he will continue to play Test cricket and T20Is.
Kohli bows out of ODIs as one of the format's greatest, with over 13,000 runs, 50 centuries, and multiple ICC titles. His aggressive yet composed approach has been instrumental in shaping modern Indian cricket.
With the 2027 World Cup on the horizon, India will now look toward its younger stars to carry forward his legacy.
